Jute trade

The jute trade is centered mainly around Bangladesh and the Indian State of West Bengal. The major producing country of jute is Bangladesh, due to its natural fertile soil. Bengal Jute was taken to Europe early in the 17th century by the Dutch and the French and later by the East India Company to Britain. By the 1790s a much larger trade had developed in the Scottish city of Dundee, the European home of jute spinners. Introduced to the British by the East India Company, crude fibre was the bulk still exported from Bengal after 1790, but a thriving trade did not really begin until after 1850 through mechanised processing, to meet rising demand. Raw jute was imported from Bengal by the British East India Company. British Jute Barons grew rich processing jute and selling manufactured products made from jute. Dundee Jute Barons and the British East India Company began to set up jute mills in Bengal and by 1895 jute industries in Bengal overtook the Scottish jute trade. Many Scots emigrated to Bengal to set up jute factories. More than a billion jute sandbags were exported from Bengal to the trenches during World War I and even more during WWII and also exported to the Americas, especially the United States southern region to bag cotton and coffee. It was used in the fishing, construction, art and in the arms industry. India, China, Thailand, Myanmar also produce Jute in low quantities. India is one of the largest importers of Jute in South Asia and also produces processed jute products in the world, while Bangladesh is the largest producer and exporter of raw jute. Therefore, the local price of raw jute in Bangladesh is the international price. Ironically, the local price of jute goods produced in India set their own price.
As an input to the jute manufacturing (goods) industry, the supply for jute is derived from the demand. Nearly 75% of jute goods are used as packaging materials, burlap, gunny cloth, (hessian), and sacks. Carpet Backing Cloth, the third major jute outlet gucci vesker, is fast growing in importance. Being a major player in the long history of jute trade and having finest natural fiber, Bangladesh has always had an advantage in raw jute trading. Bangladesh is still the largest producer and exporter of raw jute in the world. After the separation of Bangladesh (East Pakistan) from Pakistan in 1971, the jute trading was not limited to specific groups like India or Pakistan. After the independence of Bangladesh, most privately owned jute mills were nationalized under the socialist policies of the Awami League government.
Later, to control these jute mils in Bangladesh, the government built up Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC). No other jute mills were allowed to grow in the private sector before 1975. After Ziaur Rahman became Bangladesh president a new age dawned upon the Bangladesh jute industry. This incident grew many raw jute traders from different corners of Bangladesh who used to supply raw jute to BJMC owned jute mills. This group of traders are called Beparis, who buy raw jute directly from the farmers.

BJMC also operates mills that does not deal in jute, including Galfra Habib Ltd., Mills Furnishing Ltd. and Jute-Fibre Glass Industry. Jute cultivation and jute trade in Bangladesh are sectors where significant incidence of child labor has been observed and recorded in the 2014 TVPRA List issued by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs.
The entrepreneurs of the Dundee jute industry in Scotland were called the Jute Barons. They generally traded in finished products made from jute. The industry was the gateway for jute products in Europe for almost half a century, starting from the early 18th century to the middle of 19th century. The Dundee jute industry started to fall when the Jute Barons started to invest money in setting up jute mills in East Bengal, making the products cheaper naturally as it grows there.
Tata and Birla are the two major business giants in India, that largely due to its jute trade began to grow. Both these industrial groups produced immense wealth trading in this fine fibre from Bengal and their first business was trading in jute from Bengal. Between them, the Birla family was a Marwari family along with Mittal and Bajaj. The latter two families also had jute as their major business in their business line.
After liberation from the British, East Bengal with possessing the finest jute fiber stock, lacked an effective industrialsed jute manufacturing. Several group of Pakistani families (mainly from West Pakistan) came into the jute industrialisation business by setting up several jute mills in Chittagong, Khulna, Dhaka and Narayanganj.

Masinga Dam

Masinga Dam is an embankment dam on the Tana River, the longest river in Kenya. It straddles the border of Embu and Machakos Counties in Eastern Province and is located about 100 km northeast of Nairobi.
Construction of the dam began in 1978. The dam was completed in 1981. It is owned by Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (TARDA). The dam is used for power production and is part of the Seven Forks Scheme.

Masinga Dam is a 60 m tall and 2,200 m long embankment dam. The volume of the dam is 4,950,000 m³. The dam contains a spillway and a bottom outlet.
At full reservoir level (maximum flood level of 1,056.5 m) the reservoir of the dam has a surface area of 120 km² and its total capacity is 1,56 billion m³. Minimum operating level is normally 1,037 m. On June 26, KenGen shut down the power plant because the operating level had fallen to 1

Because of its large volume, the reservoir is crucial in regulating the flow of water for the other 4 hydroelectric power plants downstream.
The run-of-the-river hydroelectric power plant went operational in 1981. It is owned by TARDA, but operated by Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen). The plant has a nameplate capacity of 40 MW. Its average annual generation is between 128 (in 2008) and 232 (in 2007) GWh, depending on the water flow of the Tana River.
The power plant contains 2 Kaplan turbine-generators with 20 MW each. The turbines were provided by Escher Wyss, the generators by ABB fotball klær. The maximum hydraulic head is 49 m, maximum flow per turbine is 45.9 (45) m³/s.
Capital cost of the dam was 172 mio. USD.

Den snart 100 år gamle fotballklubben Jerv har kommet seg opp til Obosligaen, anført av den tidligere Champions League-vinneren Steinar Pedersen.

Pedersen, som vant Europas viktigste klubbturnering med Borussia Dortmund i 1996, er nå hovedtrener i Jerv.

Klubben fikk en strålende start på sesongen, da det ble 2-2 i bortekampen mot Sandnes Ulf, som i fjor spilte i Tippeligaen.

Vi besøkte Jerv før seriestart, for å se nærmere på hva klubben har å by på.

– Dette er en tradisjonsrik klubb som har vaket nedover i seriesystemet, men potensialet er stort, sier Steinar Pedersen.

Finn Fredvig Erichsen i seniorgruppa til Jerv gleder seg ikke bare til å se fotball på høyere nivå, men også til å få på plass et nytt vaskerom.

– Nå skal klubben bygge et nytt vaskeri. Det er på høy tid, forteller han.

– Hva gjorde dere før når dere vasket klær her?

– Vi hadde et lite rom på halvannen ganger halvannen meter, hvor du måtte gå ut for å skifte mening. Det var så trangt at det var helt forferdelig.

Det er ingen hemmelighet at svette fotballklær produserer sterke odører.

– Av og til lukter det svette og tåfis så det svir i øynene, humrer han.
